The job offer

About the role

As an Electrical Engineer, you will be at the forefront of designing, programming, debugging, installation, and maintenance of a robust and scalable hardware architecture that powers our robotic harvesting system. This role offers an exceptional opportunity to contribute to an innovative mission with a dynamic team and apply your automation expertise to exciting and ever-changing challenges in agriculture. Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Electrical Systems: Analyze, troubleshoot, and improve existing electrical designs to enhance performance, safety, and reliability. Create, and update detailed electrical schematics and wiring diagrams using industry-standard tools and best practices. Design electrical panels and work confidently with both high- and low-voltage electrical systems.
  • System Integration: Seamlessly integrate a variety of sensors (e.g., cameras, IMUs, proximity sensors, INS-RTK) and actuators (e.g., robotic arms, grippers, motor drives) into the robotic harvester system to enable advanced automation.
  • Communication and Networking: Design and maintain communication protocols that ensure seamless data exchange between hardware components and the overall control system.
  • PLC Programming: Manage, design and write safety PLC programs in accordance with agricultural machinery safety standards and functional safety requirements.
  • CAN Protocols: Write CAN communication protocols with real-time actuator/machine control.
  • Field Testing and Troubleshooting: Participate in rigorous field tests to validate hardware performance in real-world agricultural settings. Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues promptly during both testing and deployment.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with software developers, mechanical designers and technicians to ensure cohesive system performance and innovation.

Desired Profile

  • University degree in Electrical, Automation, or Robotics Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in hardware development, ideally in a fast-paced or startup environment. Demonstrated success in designing hardware architecture and integrating systems for complex projects.
  • Member in good standing of the OIQ (Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec) is a plus.
  • Proven ability to design and implement electrical systems, including both high- and low-voltage configurations.
  • Experience with multiple brands of industrial PCs and PLC platforms. Familiarity with Beckhoff/TwinCAT is a plus.
  • Knowledge of actuators and their application in automated systems.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols for seamless data exchange.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and debugging skills for electrical systems, wiring issues, and control circuits.
  • Strong analytical approach to diagnosing and resolving electrical faults in industrial / agriculture environments.
  • Proactive attitude towards tackling challenges in a dynamic and innovative environment.
  • Excellent communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and convey intricate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Being able to travel in the United States (California and/or Arizona).
